Samuel C Fanning

Company "F"

4th Illinois Cavalry

Samuel C. Fanning, the older brother of Joseph Smith Fanning. Both brothers rode their horses from Kentucky to Danville, enlisting in Company "F" 4th Illinois Cavalry, in 1861. Samuel rode with his brother in war trying to watch out for his younger brother. Samuel became wounded in action in early November 1863, and died at Camp Clear Creek, Mississippi (The Hebron Plantation).

Sometime after the war, Samuel C. Fanning's Grave was moved from Hebron Plantation to The Vicksburg National Cemetery. I took this picture of his head stone the summer of 2000.
