SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection of six large record books from Company "M" of the 4th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry consists of a clothing book, a descriptive roll of the company, morning reports, the record of a general court martial, and an order book. In addition to specific information regarding people and events, these books provide insight into the general routine and living conditions for Civil War soldiers.

"Clothing Report" for Company "M" Fourth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, 1863 -1864. [Box 1, Folder 1]

Records concerning the uniforms, equipment, weapons and other property of soldiers. Inventories, copies of orders, etc.

"Company Descriptive Book" for Company "M" of the Fourth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. [Box 1, Folder 2]

Physical statistics (height, weight, complexion, etc.) and other information (age, birthplace, occupation, miscellaneous remarks) on members of the company.

"Morning Reports" for Company "M" of the Fourth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, May 1862 -October, 1864. [Box 1, Folder 3]

Various notes and statistics on the company, taken down daily by Company Captains.

Report by Brigadier General M. Brayman, copies of correspondence, and transcript of trial for a bribery case involving J. A. Cran and Captain J. H. Odlin, 1864. [Box 2, Folder 4]

"Record of General Court Martial convened at Natchez, Miss., July 22, 1864." [Box 2, Folder 5]

Copies of correspondence regarding and transcripts of the trials of various soldiers on July 22, 1864.
